La baguette

All you have to do is walk down the street to understand the near-national obsession the French have for their bread. Forty-eight inch baguettes stick out under the arms of pedestrians like bready lances, or are else spotted sticking out of backpacks ,shopping carts, laid horizontally across babystrollers and on the laps of business suits in the metro. Some, without respect to the long slender loaf, fold it in two.
